• Every chapter contains a hypothetical and numerous problems that put the student in the role of lawyer. This new edition contains many new hypotheticals and problems.
• This edition’s discussion and problems have been updated to assume the jurisdiction has adopted the current version of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. The book does not include the text of the Model Rules, though, so students will need to purchase a supplement.
• The book contains material designed to further students’ professional identity development. The opening chapter discusses professional identity. Each chapter contains a “profile of lawyer professionalism” that summarizes the professional life of an exemplary lawyer.
• The third edition contains a new chapter on attorney well-being. In addition to providing suggestions about well-being tools that lawyers may use in practice, the chapter also discusses hazards of ethics opinions and professional conduct rules suggesting that lawyers who struggle with addiction or mental health issues cannot comply with professional conduct obligations.
• The three conflict of interest chapters are reorganized. Conflicts of interest are explained through text, examples, and numerous problems with the goal of making this material more accessible to students.
• Some chapters raise issues of behavioral legal ethics. Specifically, behavioral science can explain why even well-intentioned lawyers sometimes make unethical decisions. Understanding these issues can result in better attorney decision-making.
• The bar admission chapter includes updated materials discussing rehabilitation from addiction and bar admission.
• This edition expands coverage of criminal law practice, now including a chapter focusing on prosecutors and another focusing on criminal defense lawyers.
• The judicial ethics materials are more condensed in this edition, now contained in a single chapter.
