Unlike conventional legal research books that limit their focus to teaching students how to find and use the various sources of law, this book stresses a systematic, practice-oriented approach to acquiring legal-research skills. It presents a simple yet highly effective research strategy that helps students efficiently solve the types of complex legal-research problems they can expect to encounter in the workplace. In addition, the book includes a section on the various primary and secondary sources of law, and how best to find and use them, as well as a section containing tips for summer interns and associates, and a Trouble-Shooting Guide to help students overcome the occasional obstacles that may crop up in their research projects. The book also includes a detailed Research Checklist for students to use before turning in their work. For these reasons, the book makes an ideal stand-alone text for the first-year legal-research class, as well as an excellent supplementary text for advanced legal-research classes.

Anchored by faculty-authored formative self-assessments keyed to our most popular casebooks, CasebookPlus allows students to test their understanding of core concepts as they are learning them in class – on their own, outside of the classroom, with no extra work on your part. CasebookPlus combines three important elements:

Students can still utilize CasebookPlus digital resources if they’ve purchased a used book or are renting their text by purchasing the Learning Library at westacademic.com.

With CasebookPlus, you can customize your students’ learning experience and monitor their performance. The quiz editor allows you to create your own custom quiz set, suppress specific quiz questions or quiz sets, and time-release quiz questions. Additionally, the flexible, customized reporting capability helps you evaluate your students’ understanding of the material and can also help your school demonstrate compliance with the new ABA Assessment and Learning Outcomes standards.

The book has been updated a bit from the second edition to reflect more recent changes in electronic research technology. For example, the third edition of the book contains an additional section in Chapter 4 devoted to Brief-Analyzer tools (e.g., Westlaw’s Quick Check and Lexis’ Brief Analysis). And the parts of the book discussing free and lower-cost research (e.g., Chapter 8, section C) have been updated to reflect changes in the available resources.

The other principal differences between the second edition and this third edition are:

(1) Chapters 1-5 now contain short “takeaways” at the end of each chapter summarizing the main points for that chapter. The purpose of these takeaways is to reinforce the main points in order to facilitate student recall.

(2) Structurally, Parts II and III have switched places in the book. It seems to me that students should gain familiarity with the primary and secondary sources of law before turning their attention to refining their research skills.

(3) Finally, there are some additional, minor changes sprinkled throughout the book to clarify certain topics, and to ensure that the material is up to date.
