The Seventh Edition of Cases and Materials on Family Law offers students a comprehensive and engaging introduction to family law with a distinctive focus on how large-scale social inequalities structure, and are structured by, family law. The Seventh Edition spotlights issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, trans, and class inequalities—often at their intersections—across the entirety of the book in ways that mark the book as squarely in the present, but informed by a sense of history to help students imagine the future of family law. The Seventh Edition features a revamped introductory chapter with voices from across the political spectrum designed to get students excited about the course from day one, along with new materials on children, especially child custody and welfare, and comprehensive engagement with assisted reproduction. For student experience, the Seventh Edition includes a range of experiential tools, including problems on the financial aspects of divorce and support and a comprehensive divorce negotiation exercise, that give students a taste for practice in the field. All of this is supported by a detailed Teacher’s Manual that guides adopters through the casebook’s materials while offering thoughts on the legal, ethical, and pedagogical challenges that they raise.

Changes in the new edition include an entirely revamped introductory chapter, and significant reorganizations elsewhere in the casebook, notably including the chapter on marriage, updated in light of Obergefell v. Hodges, the chapter on parenting, which reintroduces significant materials and discussion on child welfare, and the chapter on jurisdiction, which includes relevant provisions from various uniform codes. Other significant changes to the casebook include introductory materials throughout, as well as a number of new cases and other materials on topics such as the right to marry, polygamy, common law marriage, constitutional sex equality, Title VII, the Family and Medical Leave Act, limits on parental autonomy, adoption, cohabitation, assisted reproductive technologies and the law, child support guidelines, international custody disputes, and alternative dispute resolution. The new edition also has new practice-oriented materials designed to enable faculty to give students more “hands-on” experiences in the classroom. These include practice questions and a negotiation exercise in the chapter on property division and support awards, and actual parenting plan forms from the Florida Supreme Court in the chapter on custody.
