International Law and the Use of Force, Cases and Materials
This casebook on international law and the use of force brings together cases and materials on the regulation of resort to armed force and the conduct of armed conflict. It covers such pressing global issues as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, maritime disputes in the South China Sea, and civilian protection in warfare. The new edition adds important new reports by United Nations Special Rapporteurs, the Council of Europe, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. It also includes new cases from the European Court of Human Rights and other courts and tribunals. The final chapter on weapons has been revised to expand coverage of new developments.

Since the publication of the second edition, a number of new global conflicts and new developments in the field of weapons technology have occurred. These developments are reflected in the new edition, which continues the comprehensive approach to this area of law by covering both the law on resort to armed force and the conduct of armed conflict. The new edition adds the important report requested by the Council of Europe on the Georgia-Russia War of 2008 and reports by United Nations Special Rapporteurs on targeted killings. New cases on detention in civil war from the United Kingdom Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights have been added as well as new reports on protection of civilians by the International Committee of the Red Cross. The final chapter on weapons has been expanded to include new technology. In addition to weapons of mass destruction and conventional weapons, the chapter now covers autonomous weapons, malicious uses of cyber space, hypersonic weapons, and military uses of outer space.
