Community Property in a Nutshell, 5th ed., summarizes community property laws in nine states (Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin). It also includes basic coverage of community property option states (Alaska and Tennessee). Each chapter covers a main topic of community property law followed by a legal analysis of the cases and statutes of each of the nine community property states. Chapters are in-depth enough to be useful to students, lawyers, and legislators, but also accessible enough for easy reference. Chapter topics include introductory materials (how the nine states came to be community property states and why that matters to their current community property systems), premarital agreements, transmutations, property characterization (how to identify community versus separate property), commingling (how to dissolve commingled property into community property and separate property components for specific categories of assets), management and control during marriage, liabilities during marriage, issues relevant to non-married intimate partners, marital dissolution, termination of a marriage by death of a spouse, and relevant areas of state/federal overlap. Statutory materials and cases are up to date for each of the nine states.
