This book, The Law and Legal System of the United States, fulfills the need for a one-volume work on American law that is both comprehensive and concise and is more than a “primer” or introduction. This book is crafted to cover (1) the legal profession; (2) history of law; (3) classic court cases; and (4) famous laws and cases that have decisively shaped American society. One who studies this book will understand the workings of the three branches of American government, federalism and the relationship between the National Government and the States, the role of administrative agencies, and the fundamental rights and liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. He/she will learn the main lines of American private law, family law, contracts, torts, and business law. This book introduces civil and criminal litigation and trial practice. Finally, this work teaches “thinking like a lawyer,” the distinctive methodologies employed by lawyers and judges, including controversial matters such as “textualism” and “originalism.” The problem format of this work is designed to encourage discussion and debate.
